What Tattoo Should I Get and Where? – Find the Right Tattoo for You

Some people know exactly what kind of tattoo they want. Others only have an idea, a memory, or a few inspiration pictures. Both are great starting points.

Choosing the right tattoo isn’t just about the design. It’s also about where it will be placed, how big it should be, and how it will look on your body in the years to come.

What Should I Get Tattooed?

Something you can connect with and will enjoy wearing for years to come.

Your tattoo might have personal meaning or represent an important event, person, or memory. But it’s equally fine to choose a shape, design, or artistic style simply because you find it beautiful.

Not every tattoo needs to have a deep meaning.

What matters is that not every design works equally well at every size or on every part of the body. A delicate, highly detailed design, for example, needs enough space for its details to remain clearly recognizable over time.

If you’re unsure about the style, take a look at our work or bring along a few inspiration pictures.

Where Should I Get My Tattoo?

Choosing the right placement is just as important as choosing the design itself. Different parts of the body vary in skin texture, sensitivity, movement, and everyday exposure to friction and other stresses.

There are three important things to consider when choosing your tattoo placement:

  • Appearance: How will the design follow the natural contours of your body?
  • Sensitivity: How uncomfortable might the tattooing process be in that area?
  • Longevity and healing: How much friction, movement, and everyday wear will the area experience?

Which Body Areas Are Good Choices for a Tattoo?

The forearm, outer upper arm, shoulder, outer thigh, and calf are all suitable locations for a wide variety of tattoo styles.

These areas generally make it easier to plan and position a design. Many people also find tattooing in these locations more comfortable than in more sensitive areas of the body.

However, everyone experiences pain differently. What feels only slightly uncomfortable to one person can be much more challenging for someone else.

Which Tattoo Placements Deserve Extra Consideration?

There are no body areas that are universally off-limits for tattoos. However, certain locations require extra care when it comes to the tattooing process, healing, or how the design will look over time.

Fingers and Hands

Hand tattoos can look striking, but they are constantly exposed to everyday wear. Frequent handwashing, friction, and movement can make consistent healing and long-term detail retention more difficult, particularly on the fingers.

Some designs may require a touch-up later on.

Elbows and Knees

The skin in these areas regularly bends and stretches, and the surface is not completely even.

Tattoos are certainly possible here, but choosing the right design and size is particularly important. The composition should work with the natural movement of the body.

Ribs and Spine

Many people specifically choose these areas because tattoos can beautifully follow the natural contours of the body.

However, tattooing around the ribs and spine can be more painful for many people. This is especially worth considering for larger designs or longer tattoo sessions.

Armpits and Backs of the Knees

These are sensitive areas that are constantly in motion. Both the tattooing process and the subsequent healing period may require additional care.

Everyday movement, sweating, and friction from clothing can be particularly uncomfortable while the tattoo is still fresh.

Feet and Ankles

A tattoo on the foot can look beautiful and distinctive, but friction from shoes and socks can make the healing process more difficult.

It’s important to consider in advance how you can protect the area and reduce irritation during the healing period.

What Do We Recommend Avoiding?

We’re not here to tell you what kind of tattoo you should like. What we can do is help make sure your idea works well from both a technical and artistic perspective.

Sometimes a design contains too many small details for the size you’ve chosen. In other cases, the placement might affect how the tattoo looks as time goes by.

When that happens, we’ll explain why we recommend an adjustment and work with you to find a better solution.

Our goal isn’t to talk you out of your idea, but to help you bring it to life in the best possible way.

Not Sure What Tattoo You Want Yet?

That’s completely normal. You don’t need to arrive with a finished design.

At Vision of You, we can talk through your ideas, explore your inspiration pictures, and help you find the right style, size, and placement.

If a particular detail wouldn’t work well, we’ll suggest an alternative. The final decision is always yours.
